Leaders in the Black community are breathing a sigh of relief because of the Derek Chauvin verdict.
But they said the work is just beginning.
Like many people, Reverend Harriett Walden was on pins and needles until the Chauvin verdict was announced on Tuesday.
“Yeah it was a sigh of relief,” Walden said.
Rev. Walden founded Mothers for Police Accountability more than three decades ago.
“30 years after Rodney King and the first camera, this camera, this recording that the young girl did brought about a conviction. Otherwise it would have been just another story,” Walden said. ....

Washington Legislature sees record diversity as majority Democrats pledge focus on equity

4:14
This year, the Washington State Legislature has welcomed a record number of lawmakers of color, including a record number of Black lawmakers who are all Democrats.
The increasing diversity comes in the wake of last year’s civil rights protests and amid ongoing demands for police accountability and racial justice.
It also comes as Gov. Jay Inslee and majority Democrats in the Legislature are pledging to apply an “equity lens” to their budgeting and policy making.
In December, Inslee unveiled what he called a “historic equity policy package” for the upcoming legislative session. Among his proposals was to create an independent office to investigate police excessive force, fund a new state office of equity, and establish Juneteenth as a state holiday to celebrate the end of American chattel slavery.  ....

SPOKANE, Wash. Washington State House Democrats have unveiled a massive $25.8 billion transportation package that would cover the next 16 years. To pay for it Washington residents will have to pay more at the pump and other places.
Democrats say their priorities for the proposes package include maintenance and preservation, investments in front line communities and supporting economic recovery.
“Our proposal is much more substantial than any in state history because the needs and challenges are so much bigger,” said Rep. Jake Fey from District 27.
Most of the $26 billion revenue would come from a gas tax. During the next two years, you’d pay 18 cents more a gallon. Also an additional 3 cent increase on diesel fuel. License plate fees would also increase by 50% as well as a 1% increase on rental car tax. The money collected would go towards two major initiatives in the state, highw ....
