In Cerys Matthews native Welsh, the word cerdd can refer to both poetry and song. This juncture forms the beating heart of the BBC Radio 6 Music presenter and musician s latest project - an album that uses both to dig deep into the British psyche.
She takes my call in a less than rock and roll setting - a local climbing centre (we speak in late 2020 when coronavirus restrictions allowed such things). Poetry feels different at the moment, the Cardiff native declares in her bright, husky, radio-friendly voice. It feels like it s not just an academic endeavour, it s not just for the establishment, it s not just for things to be written, to be hidden in books, to be learnt by rote, or by force.

We Come From The Sun is an awakening – the immediacy and presence of poetry urging you to listen, and pay attention to the beauty of now.
In such a somnolent time
We Come From The Sun is an awakening – the immediacy and presence of poetry urging you to listen, and pay attention to the beauty of now. For her latest album Cerys Matthews selected 10 poets to record their work and composed background music to accompany it, alongside Joe Acheson of Hidden Orchestra. The result is a sound journey that orbits the theme of Genesis by way of present British heritage.
The album was composed by Cerys and the Hidden Orchestra, and features ten UK poets. Ahead of today s release, Adam s track was played on the Steve Wright in the Afternoon show on Radio 2, on Wednesday afternoon. Adam was invited to the legendary Abbey Road studios in London - used by the the likes of the Beatles, Kate Bush and Amy Winehouse - to record his poem back in February. I can’t stress enough how much of a thrill it was to get to record in Abbey Road, and get a quick tour of the big Beatles studio afterwards, he said.
CERYS MATTHEWS: I think the word poetry can limit your idea of what poetry is. It is just like music, It is not just one thing. that only the elite or educated can access or identify with. There is no need for prejudice, no need for fear. I say this because I so often heard: “Well the last time I did poetry was in school and I hated it.” Don’t think of it like that!
If you are brought up in a culture where it is alive and well – in hymns, in children’s lullabies – and there are so many cultures where it is alive, it is not just the equivalent in music of Wagner. There is a whole spectrum that exists in poetry. You’ve got the equivalent of “Can’t Get You Out Of My Head” or “The Birdy Song”. You do have your John Cooper Clarkes, you’ve got side splitting hilarious poetry and limericks. It is Allen Ginsberg, it’s Little Piggy Went to Market ! It’s the Beatles, it’s Kylie Minogue!
