Center for Innovation coming to former Henderson Middle School location

HENDERSON — The building that was once the home of Henderson High School and Henderson Middle School is set to become a major focal point for Vance County later this year with the introduction of the Center for Innovation.
Vance County Schools Superintendent Tony Jackson spearheaded the Center for Innovation and sees the project as a way to further galvanize the county’s trajectory when it comes to education and investment into the community.
“I think the Center for Innovation is going to be an incubator for ideas, thought, growth, professional development and community engagement,” Jackson said. “For us, I think this will serve as a hub to begin bringing our community together around those things that are possible for the future.” ....

Vance school top state average in annual bus inspections

HENDERSON — The Vance County Schools’ transportation department recently received its annual bus inspection from the state. In the process, inspectors assign point values to violations, meaning a low score is the desired outcome.
During the inspection, the state thoroughly examined 10-percent of the school system’s bus fleet. This year, Vance County Schools achieved a score of 22.43.
Since 2017, the Vance school district continues to improve its inspection score, performing at a level better than the state average.
“I am very proud of our mechanics, who on a daily basis ensure our buses are safe and running properly,” said David Cooper, VCS transportation director. “We are elated that one of our buses had a perfect score. Our department strives daily to put the safety of our students and bus drivers as our No. 1 priority.” ....

Local superintendents OK after 2 attendees at annual meeting test positive for COVID

HENDERSON — Three local superintendents are fine after a recent in-person association meeting, after which two people attending tested positive for COVID-19.
The North Carolina School Superintendents’ Association held its annual meeting at the Grandover Resort in Greensboro on Dec. 3-4.
The meeting saw short-lived attendance from Vance County Schools’ leader.
VCS Superintendent Tony Jackson was “briefly” at the meeting, but had no contact with the affected individuals, VCS Public Information Officer Aarika Sandlin said in an email. Jackson gave a short welcome and spent the remainder of his time away from the meeting, attending the State Board Meeting virtually, which, she said, was taking place at the same time. ....
