Hallowell homestead offers tours of gardens, grounds Share HALLOWELL Vaughan Woods & Historic Homestead at 2 Litchfield Road, a nonprofit nature preserve and historic house museum, invites the public next month to tour the gardens and grounds of the 1794 Vaughan Homestead. Tours are to be held from 9 a.m. to noon Thursdays, Aug. 12, 19 and 26, and between noon and 2 p.m. Fridays, Aug. 6, 13, 20 and 27. The colonial revival flower garden was installed in 1890 and contains many original features. Visitors can pack a picnic lunch and eat under one of the covered gazebos or on the front porch. They can stroll the gardens and grounds on a self-guided interpretive tour. Booklets and maps are provided upon arrival. ....

The two-week event has been organized by Vision Hallowell, the Hallowell Conservation Commission and Kennebec Land Trust. People can visit some of the many businesses that have opened recently or reconnect with old favorites downtown. Hallowell’s Vaughan Woods has been overcrowded recently, so the groups look to introduce the community to other outdoor Hallowell places, like “Little Egypt.” ....

Monks Hill rises to 750 feet over the pond’s west shore, its wooded summit marked by a simple sign amid a park-like grove of white pines. ....
Nonprofits across Maine are sharing $100,000 in charitable grants that will support building preservation and maintenance and have a long-term impact on local economies, according to the funder. The Rhode Island-based 1772 Foundation awarded matching grants from $2,000 to $10,000 to 18 nonprofits from Kennebunk to Eastport, representing historic preservation groups in 11 of the state s 16 counties. The money can be used for exterior improvements like painting, surface restoration, fire and security systems, as well as repairing and restoring chimneys, porches, roofs, windows, foundations, sills and masonry. Margaret Waldock, president of the 1772 Foundation, said the grants are an investment in protecting assets that are important to communities and their economic development. ....
