Authorities share details on murder of Ottawa woman

OTTAWA – A 21-year-old Ottawa woman died from multiple stab wounds on Monday according to the LaSalle County Coroner. During a press conference on Wednesday, authorities identified the victim as Grace N. Taylor. The suspect in the homicide, 29-year-old Michael Steven Swift of Mokena, was taken into custody that same day during an investigation in conjunction with the Ottawa Police and Mokena Police. LaSalle County State’s Attorney Todd Martin said that police were first notified of the incident in the 300 block of West McKinley Road in Ottawa by a phone call from a family member related to Swift. Swift is facing three counts of homicide and is being held on $3 million bond. ....

OTTAWA, Ill. (AP) A man was arrested Wednesday for allegedly killing his ex-wife s parents and shooting out windows at his ex-wife s house, ending a search that had prompted authorities to urge residents of a small Illinois village not to go outside.
At a press briefing, LaSalle County Sheriff Tom Templeton said that Donald Fredres, 37, of Sandwich, was spotted in a field not far from where the shootings occurred Tuesday night and was taken into custody shortly before 7 a.m. Wednesday. Templeton said detectives believe Fredres acted alone so that it was safe for residents in and around the village of Sheridan to return to normal activities. ....

Gunfire exchanged in Oglesby incident Tuesday; squad car stolen

OGLESBY – Oglesby police officers exchanged gunfire with a suspect Tuesday after an investigation of an RV that was parked at Illinois Valley Community College around 8 PM. The LaSalle County Sheriff’s Office say that 35-year-old Peter Douglas Bergsma, possibly from Michigan, allegedly pulled a semi-automatic pistol after he exited the RV and began firing. Officers returned fire and took cover, however the suspect reportedly drove off in an Oglesby police car and left the campus. The vehicle was located by responding law enforcement agencies in a residential area abandoned with a damaged tire and busted windows due to gunfire. Bergsma was spotted on foot near the Shippingsport Bridge and stopped when told to by officers. He was taken to IVCH with a head wound described as being a graze injury from a bullet.
