CLEMSON, S.C. – In its first ACC match of the season, the Clemson women’s soccer team (6-2, 1-0 ACC) capitalized on opportunities and played consistent defense all match long to solidify a 2-0 win over Pittsburgh (7-2, 0-1 ACC) on Thursday night at Historic Riggs Field. Junior Hal Hershfelt scored the first goal for the Tigers in the 17th minute. This was the third match in a row that Hershfelt has scored the first goal for Clemson, and this one came off a give and go from Makenna Morris, registering her fourth assist of the season. The stout Tiger defense held the Panthers to only three shots in the first half and only one shot on goal, which was defended by goalkeeper Hensley Hancuff. The Tigers continued knocking on the door in the second half until Maliah Morris drew a foul in the penalty box to create an opportunity for the Tigers to stretch their lead to two. CLEMSON, S.C. - Clemson kicked off its regular-season slate with an impressive 8-0 victory over the Saint Francis Red Flash on Thursday night at Historic Riggs Field. The Tigers’ offensive attack exploded early on with Renee Lyles, Sydney Minarik and Grace Wagner all netting their first-career goals in the first 45 minutes. Sophomores Megan Bornkamp and Makenna Morris both added braces in the half as well, with Bornkamp’s goals coming off well-played corner kicks by Renee Guion. Juniors Maliah Morris and Caroline Conti each notched a pair of assists in the half. This was the most goals in a half for Clemson since the Tigers scored nine in the first half of a 14-0 win over Alabama A&M on September 22, 2013. The No. 4 Clemson men’s soccer team will welcome the top-ranked Pittsburgh to Historic Riggs Field as the two sides are set to meet on Saturday, April 17 at 7 p.m. for a chance to win the ACC’s automatic bid into the 2020 NCAA Tournament. Attendance is free for the 1,000 permitted spectators at Historic Riggs Field, and face coverings must be worn at all times unless eating or drinking. The top-5 match is set to be broadcast on ACCN starting at 7 p.m. as Dalen Cuff and Angela Hucles call the action. Saturday’s match will feature the winners of the ACC’s Atlantic and Coastal Divisions from the 2020-21 season. Clemson earned the right to host this match after winning the 2020 ACC Championship. Since a team must be deemed the winner of Saturday’s match, penalty kicks will be utilized if the match is tied after double-overtime.
