Celebrating African American Military Milestones

Alongside churches and schools, the military is one of the oldest and most important institutions in the U.S. The U.S. Armed Forces include the Army, Marine Corps, Navy, Air Force, Space Force, and Coast Guard. Even though an army has existed since the start of the Revolutionary War in 1775, the official U.S. military was not formed until the U.S. Congress had its first session on September 29, 1789.
African Americans have served in every war on American soil and abroad since the French and Indian War, also known as the Seven Years War. However, they served predominantly in segregated units. When allowed admission, African Americans faced harsh mistreatment in the military academies, received demeaning military assignments (often relegated to the galley and not to combat), and were denied promotions and the opportunity to serve as leaders.  ....

Fanny Jackson Coppin: An educator of educators

There are millions of elementary and secondary classroom educators in the United States. These educators learn the techniques of teaching and get experiences in practicing how to educate others. This season of practicing is commonly known as student-teaching. Though student-teaching is a common practice in America, what’s uncommon is American people knowing that this vocational practice was created by an African-American woman named Fanny Jackson Coppin.
Coppin, born in 1837 under the name Fanny Marion Jackson, had a zeal for education at a young age. When Fanny turned 14 she took on a job. The job didn’t pay much, but she saved up her earnings to hire an academic tutor for herself. Once given the opportunity to attend school, she quickly demonstrated her insatiable desire for being educated and educating others. ....

Black-History Archives Are in Trouble

William Henry Dorsey was an information hoarder. An African American of means who lived in 19th-century Philadelphia, Dorsey suffered from a “malady” that afflicted others of his era: archive fever. He spent much of his long life he was born in 1837 and died in 1923 clipping newspaper articles and pasting them into one or another of nearly 400 scrapbooks, organized by topic.
Dorsey’s scrapbooks represent a bricolage of one man’s far-ranging interest in African American history and culture. He clipped articles mainly from northern newspapers, Black and white, including some extremely rare publications. The scrapbooks hold articles on Black emigration schemes, fraternal orders, actors, and centenarians who lived through slavery. Dorsey devoted one scrapbook to an 1881 North Carolina convention of Black Republicans, one of many such gatherings at which African Americans envisioned post-emancipation political futures. He devoted another scrapbook to l ....

In the Georgia runoffs, 'poll chaplains' continue King's legacy

(This story was produced in partnership with Just Media, a national hub for grassroots storytelling on the politics of policing and justice reform.)
The countdown is on for Georgia s runoff elections on Jan. 5, pitting incumbent Republicans David Perdue and Kelly Loeffler against their Democratic challengers, Jon Ossoff and Rev. Dr. Raphael Warnock. With mail-in and early voting in full swing, Georgians of faith are working around the clock to mobilize their communities to vote.
The Democratic Party hopes to draw on Warnock s pastoral background to mobilize Black Christian voters. Warnock is the senior pastor of the historic Ebenezer Baptist Church, the home congregation of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The linkage to King is core to Warnock s candidacy. For churches and many faith-based groups, on the other hand, the focus is nonpartisan. As Pastor Lee May from Transforming Faith Church in Decatur put it, If our people come out to vote, we win. ....
