UNVEILED: How new flood channel will protect Lismore

Premium Content Subscriber only FOUR years ago, water was overtopping the levee wall in Lismore in one of the town s worst flood events on record. A new channel, which was officially opened on Wednesday, hoped to lessen the impact of similar major flooding in future. Lismore City Council s $8.2 million South Lismore Flood Mitigation Project is now officially complete and has already passed the test of two floods. Flood modelling suggests the project should reduce peak water levels in the CBD, North Lismore and South Lismore by as much as 100mm in a 1-in-100-year flood event.   Lismore flood: The new South Lismore Flood Mitigation is complete and has been tested by minor flooding in the past few weeks.

Culture should shape how we think about our spaces

Premium Content Subscriber only Their shared love of the ocean s fish was what sparked a connection between Nathan Galluzzo and Arakwal man Norm Graham. That connection is closely linked to some of the stories shared in an exhibition Mr Galluzzo, a masters student in landscape architecture at the University of Technology Sydney, has put on show in a free exhibition at the Byron Lighthouse Cottage. Nathan Galluzzo has focused on stories tied to Tallow Creek in his work. Arakwal residents Norm Graham and Delta Kay and former Dunecare volunteer Helen Brown were among the contributors. This was a masters research project at UTS in landscape architecture, Mr Galluzzo said.

Shaw thing: Newly created beach has no name

Premium Content Subscriber only A new beach at Pop Denison Reserve is one of the outcomes of the dredging works completed last December at Shaws Bay in East Ballina. But monitoring the area s ecological recovery is also an important part of the project. Kerri Watts, Manager Public and Environmental Health at Ballina Shire Council, said the new beach does not have a name yet. We call it East beach, she said. It s a large area where a lot of sand and dredged material has been placed. It s quite a large beach.   Photos   She said while Pop Denison Reserve offers picnic facilities and a new accessible barbecue, the new beach offers a more natural experience to visitors.

Check your crabs carefully, size limits are about to change

Premium Content Subscriber only Fishers will soon need to check their crab pots even more carefully, with fisheries announcing an increase in size limits for blue swimmer crabs caught recreationally. NSW Department of Primary Industries (DPI) Fisheries has announced changes to recreational Blue Swimmer Crab size limits set to come into effect from April 30. It was hoped an increase of only half a centimetre would increase crab numbers. Blue Swimmer crabs. Picture: John Appleyard The NSW Department of Primary Industries deputy director General Fisheries Sean Sloan said: “The small increase in the size limit for blue swimmer crabs from 6.0cm to 6.5cm will assist total egg production by protecting spawning crabs and improve the productivity of the stock over time.”

'No decision has been made' on future of Wollumbin track

Premium Content Subscriber only A decision on the future of the Wollumbin summit track is yet to be made, according to a Tweed Shire councillor. Cr James Owen said he had spoken to the office of Energy and Environment Minister Matt Kean and was told no decision had been cemented. This is despite lobby group Right to Climb releasing documents obtained through Freedom of Information which indicate plans for the track to be permanently closed from November 25, 2022. The mountain, also known as Mount Warning, was closed in March last year because of rising concerns about the pandemic, and has not reopened since.
