Designer's legacy continues after tragic surfing death

A new Byron Bay landmark aimed at creating a better future for marine environments will also serve as a memorial to one of its makers.
Ian Harrison, a designer who was involved in the concept of a new sign erected at Main Beach this week, tragically lost his life while surfing at The Wreck the same day Byron Shire Council was meeting to approve the sign.
I remember waiting for Ian at council, said Positive Change for Marine Life CEO Karl Goodsell.
(He) was supposed to be presenting on our pitch for the sign.
I later found out that he had tragically passed away surfing The Wreck that very same morning. ....

Luxury resort responds to 'unfortunate' stop work order

âThe works sit wholly within the Elements of Byron property,â resort owners said.
âIn 2017 we applied to the Department (Coastal Panel) for a permanent approval, which we were informed was not required due to the works being on private land.
âAs landowners and under this regime we are required to maintain the structure for safety and integrity in perpetuity.
âThis is the first time since 2016 that we have needed to carry out any maintenance works. These works are limited to a small section of the overall structure.â
According to Elements, the contractor, Hardingâs, had conferred with the councilâs works department about the work and beach access. ....

The owners of Elements of Byron Resort say sandbagging works on the shore at Belongil are being undertaken in accordance with their legislative responsibilities.
Sandbagging has been undertaken on the beach outside the resort.
Elements has cited recent weather events, the dynamic nature of Belongil Creek and erosion as reasons for the ârepair and maintenance worksâ.
âWe are undertaking maintenance and repair on the existing geo-bag wall at the front of the resort due to it becoming unsafeâ Dion McPhee from Elements of Byron said.

Willem Ian Ungermann, 35, from Coolangatta, has amassed some 315,000 followers on Instagram for his outrageous pranks, mostly on Tweed waterways.
