Little 2-year-old Preston Shoemaker of Hollidaysburg would look up at the video board at Blair County Ballpark back in 2002 and recognize all of the Altoona Curve players.
“He’d see the players come up on the scoreboard, and it was, ‘Daddy, Tony Alvarez. Daddy, Carlos Rivera. Daddy, Kevin Haverbusch, ” Brad Shoemaker said of his son.
A lady sitting behind them on the third base line leaned over and said, “Excuse me, sir, can he read yet?”
“No, he just knows every player on the roster,” Brad Shoemaker told her.
Little Preston grew up at the ballpark in Lakemont, watching countless Curve games with his dad, keeping score and asking third base coaches for foul balls. ....

Dorothy M. Dimond, 95, of Altoona, formerly of Lakemont, passed away Sunday at Maybrook Hills Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center, Altoona. She was born in Altoona, daughter of the late Alban and Mary (Kyle) Dimond.
Dottie is survived by her son, Robert C. “Neil” Dimond; a special nephew and niece, whom she helped raise, Charles Andrews and Kathy Meckley. She is also survived by several other nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
She was preceded in death by two brothers; two sisters; and her daughter-in-law, Timberlee Randolph.
Dottie worked while attending school at Shaffer Stores Co. on 31st Street in Altoona. She was a graduate from Hollidaysburg High School and went on to work 37 years at Treese’s Drug Store in Hollidaysburg. ....

FORT MILL, S.C. (WBTV) - A person shot to death at a motel near Carowinds in York County Wednesday has been identified by officials as 18-year-old Joshua Richardson Ross of Charlotte.
Deputies say 20-year-old Isaiah Jones was arrested in the shooting. Jones was located in Iredell County and taken into custody Wednesday.
Officers found a person, later identified as Ross, who had been shot and killed in the lobby of the Sleep Inn on Lakemont Boulevard, off of Carowinds Boulevard in Fort Mill. ....

AMED has the permits it needs to construct an emergency exit driveway at its new headquarters and main station in Lakemont.
“We just got the highway occupancy permit,” Executive Director Gary Watters told the board Monday. “They’re all in place now.”
The ambulance authority “needs to get started” on the project, he said.
AMED previously obtained a stream crossing permit, a National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System permit and PennDOT’s OK on a point-of-access study, which was required because the driveway will connect with Park Avenue, a limited-access roadway.
The driveway project could cost about $300,000, Watters estimated. ....

Jury hears testimony on shoes, footprints | News, Sports, Jobs

HOLLIDAYSBURG Witnesses told a Blair County jury Friday that Paul Aaron Ross wore the type of athletic shoe linked to footprints found in an area of Canoe Creek State Park where Tina S. Miller was found dead in 2004.
Ross, the last person to be seen with the 26-year-old Miller, went on trial this week in Blair County Court, charged with first-degree murder and related sexual assault offenses.
Testimony, which resumes Monday, is expected to extend through next week.
“The pace of the trial is moving along,” President Judge Elizabeth Doyle said Friday in court before dismissing the jury for the weekend. ....
