Philharmonia Baroque taps San Francisco artist as its first composer in residence

Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra & Chorale has named Tarik O’Regan as its composer in residence the first time in its 40-year history that the early-music ensemble has supported such a position.
Plans for the British American composer’s 3½-year residency include three major commissioned works for Philharmonia: a concerto for oud (an Arabic cousin of the lute), followed by an opera and a choral work. He will also oversee a commissioning program for other composers, a composition competition, and the creation of a new ensemble under the Philharmonia umbrella dedicated to contemporary music. ....

Mozart's great American collaborator: Lorenzo da Ponte – The Forward

The librettist Lorenzo da Ponte an exiled Jewish-born Venetian who turned to the arts after proving too irreverent for the Church had a lot in common with Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.
The two shared an artistic vision, together crafting some of the most noteworthy operas of the 18th century: “Don Giovanni,” “Le Nozze di Figaro” and “Cosí fan Tutte.” Both were genius artists who, to put it generously, did not have a corresponding genius for business. Both had more than a taste for hedonism; da Ponte’s Venetian exile stemmed from the allegation that, despite his priestly duties, he had been both living in a brothel and helping devise its business plan. And the exact burial place of both men has been lost. Herein, however, lies the difference between them: While Mozart’s pauper’s grave is in or near Vienna, da Ponte’s remains are ....

This year marks the tenth anniversary of my writing this regular column for Al Jazeera.
Five years ago, I wrote a piece, “Why do we write?”, in which I reflected on this rare privilege of having a global audience and the moral responsibility that comes with that privilege. Today I wonder what is it that determines the discourse and directs the diction of our public meditations.
I began writing regularly for Al Jazeera during the heyday of the Arab Spring. This column and the Arab Spring, which first blossomed in Tunisia like a late flower in January 2011, grew together, you might say. ....
