Nurse Says Racist Comments Led to a Toxic Workplace, and a Federal Commission Agrees
A black nurse from Alabama filed a lawsuit against her employer, claiming racist comments made by its employees regarding former President Obama led to a toxic workplace. However, a district court dismissed her lawsuit, while barring her from introducing more evidence on the case.
However, the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission has just filed an amicus brief with the 11th Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals backing the nurse’s claims that she was subjected to on-the-job harassment.
“Racially Hostile Comments”
Cynthia Yelling first started working for St. Vincent Hospital in Birmingham, Alabama in 2010. She alleges that her workplace became increasingly toxic after some of her supervisors and co-workers started making racially insensitive comments about her in 2015. She says she was used to being within earshot of these remarks. ....

'It's about time': PM announces veterans' suicide inquiry

A Mackay veteran says it is “about time” the prime minister announced a royal commission into Australia’s alarming rate of veterans’ and defence force personnel suicide.
Prime Minister Scott Morrison, in announcing the inquiry on Monday, said the rate was “unacceptably high” with suicide prevention a priority for the federal government.
“In recognising the sacrifices made by our serving and former members, and their families, on behalf of the nation, we owe it to members, veterans and their families to continue to take action,” Mr Morrison said.
Mackay Vietnam War veteran Leslie Palmer, whose service resulted in post-traumatic stress disorder, said the inquiry would emphasise the need for more services such the a revolutionary wellness and treatment centre at Kinchant Dam for which the Daily Mercury’s Hub for our Heroes is campaigning. ....
