Dr. Homer Stanley Benson, Jr., 95, died peacefully in his Chattanooga home on Tuesday, May 25, 2021.  
 
A resident of Chattanooga since 2006, he was an active member of the Kiwanis Club and St. Paul’s Episcopal Church.  He also served for many years as a judge on the Torch Award Committee for the Better Business Bureau and as a volunteer counselor for SCORE.
 
Dr. Benson was born on December 29, 1925 in Columbia, South Carolina, the son of Homer Stanley Benson Sr. and Lou Ellen Bragg. His parents soon after moved back to Columbus Georgia where Dr. Benson graduated from Columbus High School. Further schooling was interrupted by his military service in World War II as a Navy dental assistant in Corpus Christi and then Great Lakes Naval Training Center.  In 1950 he graduated from the University of Georgia as a proud Sigma Chi with a BS in Chemistry. Painting murals gives parents, teachers, youth an empowering role for promoting peace


MARAWI CITY, May 19 (PIA) For youth volunteers, teachers, and parents of learners of Guimba Lilod Elementary School, painting murals has been empowering for them to join the community in promoting peace. 
Asniah Mauna-Macauyag, a mother of a kinder and grade 1 pupil, said that her desire to be a role model to her children motivated her to participate in the peace mural painting activity. She shared that parents should show their children how to unite with other people in doing activities. 
“Kahit papano makita ng anak mo na parang sinasabayan ang activity sa school para malaman niya gaano kahalaga ang pagsali sa activity. Mas maganda na ipakita sa anak mo  ang dapat gawin,” she said. ....

White Evangelical Pastors Hesitant to Preach Vaccines


As COVID-19 vaccination rates slowed this spring, Americans’ attention turned toward the groups less likely to get the shot, including white evangelicals.
Black Protestants were initially among the most skeptical toward the vaccine, but they grew significantly more open to it during the first few months of the year, while white evangelicals’ hesitancy held steady.
With African Americans, many credit robust campaigns targeting Black neighborhoods, launching vaccination clinics in Black churches, and convening discussions featuring prominent Black Christian voices for reducing rates of hesitancy. So for those eager to see higher levels of vaccination, the question became: Are white evangelical leaders doing enough to engage their own? ....
