The work was included in NZTA’s Safer Networks Program, with contractor Higgins Constructions working on behalf of the council. The council’s acting head of transport, Lynette Ellis, said the additional shoulder width was expected to “improve everyone’s safety and reduce conflict between road users”. The steep terrain of the road meant crashes often resulted in severe injuries, which the guardrails aimed to reduce, she said. Stuff Safety improvement work is expected to finish in August. Once implemented, which would take at least the next decade, Christchurch’s five main bus routes would have a “turn-up-and-go” model, where a bus arrived every 7.5 minutes between 7am and 7pm on weekdays. Presently, the main routes had a 10 or 15-minute frequency. Most of the project would be funded by the Christchurch City Council. It recently approved $71m towards the plan in its 10-year budget. Of this, $59m would be used for bus lanes and intersection improvements, $8m would go towards bus stop upgrades, and $4m was set aside to improve the central city interchange.
