The work was included in NZTA’s Safer Networks Program, with contractor Higgins Constructions working on behalf of the council. The council’s acting head of transport, Lynette Ellis, said the additional shoulder width was expected to “improve everyone’s safety and reduce conflict between road users”. The steep terrain of the road meant crashes often resulted in severe injuries, which the guardrails aimed to reduce, she said. Stuff Safety improvement work is expected to finish in August.
