A proposal to convert the Lava Bar and X Base Backpackers into housing for the homeless has been met with strong resistance from Rotorua businesses. A Chamber of Commerce survey has found 89 per cent of the 365 people who had responded as of Wednesday afternoon did not want the plans to go ahead.
A private property investor from Auckland, Peter Bidois of Torin Holdings, has told the Rotorua Daily Post he had signed a deal to buy the lease of Lava Bar and X Base Backpackers for 15 years.

Tiny Deane says his trust will consult with the community over its plans to take over a Rotorua backpackers and run it in partnership with a new medical centre where the Lava Bar now stands.
There has been an uproar from the community after the Rotorua Daily Post revealed on Wednesday an Auckland property developer has signed a deal to take over the lease of the Base Backpackers and Lava Bar.

Popular Rotorua nightclub Lava Bar could close at the end of March and become a medical centre that will form part of a new hub for the homeless - if a property deal goes through.
Homeless advocate Tiny Deane is behind the hub after working in partnership with a commercial property investor from Auckland who is about to buy the lease for the Lava Bar and neighbouring X Base Backpackers for the next 15 years.
