Rotorua s Covid-19 bruised and battered tourism and hospitality sector needs more than the potential promise of financial support in this year s Budget to help recover, industry leaders say. Andrew Wilson, interim chief executive of Rotorua Economic Development, said tourism businesses depending on high visitor volume and the international market had suffered from Covid-19 more than others.

Rain drops and sweat dripped down his face as the crowd roared for the young local builder running towards his second consecutive victory in the Rotorua Marathon. Rotorua s Michael Voss, 24, crossed the line of the 57th Rotorua Marathon five minutes ahead of his nearest rival.
Voss is the fourth man in history to claim back-to-back titles.
He joined more than 4000 runners, walkers and joggers who descended on the city s Government Gardens for Saturday s event.

Nominations are now open for this year s Rotorua business awards, which has a new name and sponsor. More than 100 Rotorua businessmen and women attended the launch of the 2021 Tompkins Wake Rotorua Business Awards at the Pullman Rotorua last night.
Rotorua Chamber of Commerce chief executive Bryce Heard said the awards hit the sweet spot with Rotorua s business community. It s exciting.

Parliament appointed a statutory commissioner to advise it on environmental issues. The advice from commissioner Simon Upton last year was that the cost of overseas international flights to our national climate debt was just under $400 per person.
This is the average cost for us and future generations to compensate for the climate-warming effect of international flights by a New Zealander today.
Covid provided a hiatus in this international tourist travel. It is surely the opportune time to introduce a climate tax at airports that reflects the threat to our climate from flying.
