Nature: Intermittent warm passages let sea turtles cross cold waters on their 9,000 mile migrations

Endangered Sea Turtle Migration May Be Linked to Ocean Warming Events

(CN) Sporadic ocean warming events may be the key to understanding the travels of endangered sea turtles, a Stanford research group said Thursday.
In a study published in the journal Frontiers in Marine Science, a team at the Stanford Woods Institute for the Environment and other institutions detailed its new study into the obscure migration patterns of the North Pacific loggerhead turtle.
“The North Pacific Loggerhead sea turtle (Caretta caretta) undergoes one of the greatest of all animal migrations, nesting exclusively in Japan and re-emerging several years later along important foraging grounds in the eastern North Pacific,” the article said. ....

Researchers and others illuminate long-standing mystery of sea turtles' epic migrations

-J.R.R. Tolkien
Known as “the lost years,” it is a little-understood journey that unfolds over thousands of miles and as much as two decades or more. Now, a Stanford-led study illuminates secrets of the North Pacific loggerhead turtles’ epic migration between their birthplace on the beaches of Japan and reemergence years later in foraging grounds off the coast of Baja California. The study, published April 8 in Frontiers in Marine Science, provides evidence for intermittent passages of warm water that allow sea turtles to cross otherwise inhospitably cold ocean barriers. The findings could help inform the design of conservation measures to protect sea turtles and other migratory sea creatures amid climatic changes that are altering their movements. ....

Small-scale fisheries offer strategies for resilience in the face of climate change

 E-Mail
Coastal communities at the forefront of climate change reveal valuable approaches to foster adaptability and resilience, according to a worldwide analysis of small-scale fisheries by Stanford University researchers.
Globally important for both livelihood and nourishment, small-scale fisheries employ about 90 percent of the world s fishers and provide half the fish for human consumption. Large-scale shocks like natural disasters, weather fluctuations, oil spills and market collapse can spell disaster, depending on the fisheries ability to adapt to change. In an assessment of 22 small-scale fisheries that experienced stressors, researchers revealed that diversity and flexibility are among the most important adaptive capacity factors overall, while access to financial assets was not as important for individual households as it was at the community scale. The research was published Jan. 23 in the journal ....
