Calgary CTrain celebrates 40th anniversary

The very first CTrain left the Anderson rail yard on May 25th 1981 and has been a staple of transportation in Calgary ever since.
“Today is the 40th birthday of the CTrain service in Calgary” said transit opertor Syd Banks over the intercom of a southbound CTrain Tuesday.
Senior rail controller Brian Langan operated the first CTrain to pick up the public 40 years ago and remembers the day fondly.
“I remember it as if it was yesterday,” said Langan. “I was sitting behind the call-on at Anderson and shaking, I was shaking so much.
Nerves aside, Langan was excited for such a big day in the city. ....

Like most bakers, Jon Olek starts his day long before sunrise.
He fires up his oven at 3:30 a.m. and bakes for three hours before setting out to deliver fresh scones, Danishes, and brioche buns to city cafes and shops.
“I get back right in time to go upstairs and help my daughter get ready for school,” he says, adding that he starts prepping for the next day’s baking when she leaves.
Olek has that flexibility in his schedule because he doesn’t work at a commercial bakery, but rather out of a commercial-grade kitchen he built in his basement, where he does business as Black Cat Baking Co. ....

COVID-19 graduation: Colleges, universities decide on in-person events


As the COVID-19 pandemic drags into a second year, colleges and universities have weighed the risks of in-person graduation ceremonies against the disappointment of college seniors who want their hard work celebrated.
Many Florida colleges and universities have decided to go ahead with plans for in-person graduations and designed ceremonies allowing for increased sanitation and social distancing. Others, including the Florida Institute of Technology, will forgo the traditional celebrations for digital alternatives.
Updated graduation plans for Eastern Florida State College were presented at a Monday board of trustees meeting. The college announced at the beginning of April that it would host in-person graduation events at the King Center for Performing Arts at its Melbourne campus. ....
