It made me chuckle at first sight, and then pause to pine a bit for the good old Saturday nights of my youth.
When I was growing up in the 1960s, the oldest in a family of five kids, Saturday nights meant hot dogs and beans for supper, the weekly dunk in the bathtub, and – wrapped in my bathrobe with a choice spot on the floor – gathering around our lone black and white console TV set. ....

The Lennon Sisters to celebrate 65th Anniversary this Christmas

On Christmas Eve 1955 The Lennon Sisters made their television debut and were formally introduced to the world. Now in 2020, the longest performing sister act of all time is celebrating their 65th Anniversary in the entertainment business this Christmas with the release of three new albums and an updated television special.
Kathy Lennon said the sisters came from a musical family and grew up listening to their father and uncles who performed as The Lennon Brothers.
“Dianne is the oldest, then Peggy, then (me), then Janet. That’s the four oldest. We have 11 brothers and sisters. There are 11 of us,” said Lennon. “We were children and we would hear dad with his brothers rehearse. They would walk away knowing their arrangements and so did we. We had trained ears and we could copy them.” ....

Who is Charley Pride? | American Masters

By Peter Cooper and Barb Hall
Often referred to as the “Jackie Robinson of Country music,” merging the line between country music and baseball was a seamless transition for Charley Pride.
Raised as less than a citizen in segregated Mississippi, Pride’s buttery voice and steely resolve earned him a place as one of American music’s most impactful artists. He landed in Nashville in 1963, the same year the Tennessee capital was the site of sit-ins and racial violence. Two years later, he was a major label recording artist in the otherwise lily-white country music field, and in short time he became a superstar whose path would lead him to a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award and a place in the Country Music Hall of Fame. ....

Tune-in to The Lawrence Welk Show at 7 p.m. Saturday evenings on OETA and most weeks you will catch a performance by southeastern Oklahoma and Durant native Gail Farrell.
Farrell was born in Salinas, California, but spent her childhood and teenage years in Durant. Her father was a cattle rancher and her mother was a plumber, so she took the most obvious route — music. She began to perform publicly at age six at rodeos and talent shows, in church, on pickup beds in the back of trucks stumping for local political candidates. She also learned how to sing gospel music from her grandmother. While attending the University of Tulsa, majoring in piano performance, she took part in the Miss Oklahoma Pageant and won in ....
