Written By: Terry McCollough | × 20 years ago (2001) The Brainerd Jaycees will donate $204,458 to non-profit organizations from the proceeds of its 11 th Annual Ice Fishing Extravaganza, held in January on Gull Lake. Ed Vobejda, contest chairman, said that Confidence Learning Center will receive 70 percent of the donations, or $143,140. 30 years ago (1991) It was a stunning weekend for Warrior athletes. Gymnast Julie Beasley won the state Class AA title in vault, scoring a 9.9 of 10.0 from all judges. Lance Hoff finished second in the 50 free at the state swim meet, breaking the school record. And Warrior wrestler Kirk Hayes took third in the 140-pound state Class AA division. ....

Written By: Terry McCollough | × FEBRUARY 17 20 years ago (2001) Senior captains Katie Majka and Kyle Goochey capped their careers in school record fashion at the state alpine ski meet at Giants Ridge. Majka finished seventh for the girls; the previous best was 13 th by Kellie Burton. Goochey finished 20 th for the boys, the highest since the program resumed in 1989-90. 30 years ago (1991) The Brainerd boys swim team won its first Section 8 title in program history. Winners were the 400 free relay of Lance Hoff, Mark Schmitz, Dave Wise and Steve Piepgras in 3:19.64; the 200 medley relay of Evan Kaneski, Hoff, Schmitz and Piepgras in a meet record 1:42.4; Hoff 21.64 in the 50 free; and Piepgras 56.98 in the 100 fly. ....

It was used for hauling freight from the NP (Northern Pacific Railroad) depot to stores around town as well as for other kinds of moving. The picture was taken in front of the railroad freight office. Before the truck, Silas Hal used teams of horses and wagons which he kept at 415 Main (now Washington Street). The 73-minute meeting from Jan. 2 is edited, with comments, to a 30-minute production by Matt Taylor. Taylor, 28, was an unsuccessful candidate for city council. 30 years ago (1991) Lance Hoff had a career night. The Warrior junior swimmer set pool records in the 50 free (21.74), the 100 free (48.90) and helped the 200 free relay team – with Steve Piepgras, Dave Wise and Mark Schmitz – to a pool record (1:33.27). Hoff s 50 free time is fastest in the state this year, and his 100 free is second. ....
