Iowa Miss Amazing celebrates girls and women with disabilities

Bella Van Gorp stood on the Franklin Junior High stage Saturday afternoon in Des Moines, a beaming smile on her face and hands on her hips.
The 19-year-old from Pella has participated in the Iowa Miss Amazing contest since she was 13 and knows how to play to the crowd.
This year, as reigning Iowa Miss Amazing Teen Queen, it was Van Gorp s job to crown the new Teen Queen Rachel Cogil, 17, of Jamaica.
Miss Amazing is a national program for girls and women with disabilities. Morgan Tooley, state director for the Iowa Miss Amazing pageant, said the contest is designed to showcase their abilities and celebrate their talents. ....

Des Moines College Student Offers Assistance to Those Learning Virtually

(Des Moines, Iowa) One Des Moines college student offering assistance to grade school students who attend school virtually during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
Kali Douglass says her mother originally asked her to help out with her younger sister s online learning, and after a few weeks, enough people reached out to give Douglass the idea to expand. She rents out space at Franklin Jr. High School for her program, The Learning Pod, which offers socially distanced pods where students taking online classes can receive assistance on various subjects.
Douglas says The Learning Pod has room for five more students, and she d like to see those spots to be used in a way that could financially assist someone. Anyone interested in the program can contact Douglass at [email protected]. ....
