Texas City Planned Parenthood Stops Abortions as ‘Sanctuary City’ Ordinance Takes Effect
Planned Parenthood of Greater Texas (PPGT) said Tuesday that it is no longer providing abortion services in its Lubbock clinic, coinciding with a “sanctuary city” ordinance that took effect on June 1.
The “sanctuary city for the unborn” ordinance, which outlaws abortion in Lubbock, was approved on May 1. Sixty-two percent of voters in Lubbock, a city of about 250,000 people in northwest Texas, backed the measure, while just under 38 percent voted against it, according to data from the Lubbock County Elections Office.
PPGT CEO Ken Lambrecht said in a statement Tuesday that abortion services will be provided “when legally possible.” ....

'Sanctuary City' election brings out younger, female voters in Lubbock

The majority of votes cast in the election for the Sanctuary City for the Unborn ordinance that will outlaw abortions in the city were from voters new to casting ballots in Lubbock s May elections.
Only 1/3 of the voters had cast a vote in a recent May municipal election, according to Mike Stevens, co-owner of Action Printing and Action Data. Stevens, who has analyzed Lubbock elections data through numerous campaign cycles, said 2/3 of the voters hadn t voted in a May election since 2018, or the May elections in 2014 or 2016.
Lubbock s elections in May during even-numbered years are for local city councils and school boards. The biggest difference between the local elections in May and the general elections in November is that May elections aren t partisan races. ....

After a citizen’s vote, Lubbock is now the largest so-called “sanctuary city for the unborn” in the country. The city is the first to pass an ordinance like this that actually has a health center that offers abortions.
Proposition A passed with 62% of votes on Saturday. Over 21,000 people voted in favor of the ordinance and 12,860 voted against it. In total, 34,260 Lubbockites voted on the measure, according to the Lubbock County Elections Office.
In mostly conservative and religious Lubbock, churches are likely one of the reasons why the ordinance passed.
Texas Tech University Political Science Professor Tim Nokken explained that, while tax-exempt churches aren’t supposed to support a specific political candidate, they can take a stance on issues. And many did this election. ....

A city in Texas voted on Saturday to become a “sanctuary city for the unborn” after its residents approved an ordinance that outlawed abortion within the city.
Sixty-two percent of voters in Lubbock, a city of about 250,000 people in northwest Texas, backed the measure while 38 percent voted against it, according to unofficial results from the Lubbock County Elections Office.
Part of the ordinance reads: “It shall be unlawful for any person to procure or perform an abortion of any type and at any stage of pregnancy in the City of Lubbock, Texas.” It also renders abortion “at all stages of pregnancy” an “act of murder” with a medical exception. ....
