AUSTINTOWN Richard J. Baldwin, 89, passed away peacefully Friday afternoon, Feb. 19, 2021, at Burton Healthcare & Rehabilitation Center in Burton.
Richard was born March 24, 1931, in Youngstown, a son of the late George and Teresa Cronin Baldwin. He attended The Rayen School, earned a GED while serving in the U.S. military, and lived most of his life in the Mahoning Valley.
Richard proudly served in the Marine Corps for four years, enlisting March 31, 1948, and was a corporal in the Corps during the Korean War. He was honorably discharged from military service March 30, 1952, and was a recipient of the Purple Heart.
Mr. Baldwin worked for U.S. Steel, Ohio Works, for 30 years as a conductor on its railroad, retiring in 1980. ....

CANFIELD Inside Frank and Marcia Micchia’s Canfield home, stained glass works immediately are observed.
That’s because 35 years ago, the General Electric retiree took up making stained glass, a meticulous and lost art.
“The hobby is labor-intensive,” Micchia, 82, said. ....

Harding highlights area black history | News, Sports, Jobs

YOUNGSTOWN Harding Elementary educators are exposing students to the accomplishments of African-Americans including some close to home as part of Black History Month.
Principal Teri Coward said black history is American history, and school staff want to provide information to student about the many African Americans throughout history who blazed trails for those who came after them.
Students choose someone to research, and they email Coward a paragraph they write from their research. She reads the information during each day’s morning announcements to share it with the school.
“The depiction of blacks in American history impacts the character of black children who don’t get to see positive images of black Americans,” Coward said. “Teaching black history gives scholars many options towards success they may not know exist.” ....

John H. Miller 1931-2021 | News, Sports, Jobs


He was born Dec. 3, 1931, in Youngstown, to William J. and Ruth F. Miller.
Jack graduated from The Rayen School in 1949. He then majored in mechanical engineering at Duke University, graduating in 1953. Following graduation, Jack served in the Air Force, attaining the rank of corporal, stationed at Andrews Air Force Base.
After the Air Force, Jack joined Hy-Way Heat Systems, Inc., founded by his father, where he spent his entire career as a mechanical engineer, alongside his brother, Bill. The company manufactured hot oil heaters and paving equipment for the road paving industry. Jack’s keen acumen led to the development of eight U.S. patents in his field. ....
