Olympic rowing great Mahe Drysdale has bid an emotional farewell to his rowing family, officially announcing his retirement on Thursday morning. Drysdale, 42, has dominated the single scull for more than a decade, winning gold at the 2012 and 2016 Olympics. At the 2008 Beijing games Drysdale was suffering from a gastro bug, when he threw-up and fainted after crossing the finish line third. He had to be carried to the medal ceremony. Drysdale missed out on NZ's Tokyo Olympic team after Jordon Parry claimed the single sculls spot. "I'd made the decision that I'd retire in Tokyo," he told Checkpoint. ....

A teenage rowing team was left in tears as officials took their gold medals from around their necks at last week’s Maadi Cup after a controversial disqualification. Hamilton Boys’ High School’s under-18 novice eight boat – mostly aged 13 and 14 - had won their final at the annual secondary schools rowing event at Lake Karapiro, which attracts over 2000 competitors and about 10,000 spectators over a week-long festival. But after the medal ceremony, their boat was weighed, and found to be 200 grams underweight. The school believes the boat may even have been sabotaged and have lodged an official appeal to Rowing New Zealand. ....
