Split Hammer: Why Utah Valley, Dixie State rekindled a 49-year-old rivalry series


OREM Friday night was not the beginning of a rivalry.
But when Utah Valley took an 87-72 win over Western Athletic Conference newcomer Dixie State in the UCCU Center, it was the inaugural game of the Old Hammer series that celebrates two schools that spent 49 years as junior college rivals and have now made the jump to Division I.
So while the Old Hammer isn t particularly old and is, in fact, so new that the trophy is still being finished the rivalry series is anything but. The series goes back to junior college s Region 18, to the formation of the Scenic West Athletic Conference, and to two schools who battled for decades as two of the top two-year programs in the state of Utah. ....

Mark Harris periodically meets with each one of the 240 young men and women serving as church missionaries under his supervision in Georgia.
During one such interview, Harris was surprised when a missionary pulled out his NFL player card and requested an autograph.
When he asked where the missionary found his football card, the young Latter-day Saint elder said he bought it online for $1.70.

Susan Lynn Riley, wife of Roger Herbert Riley, of Rexburg, ID, passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, December 23, 2020 in Idaho Falls, ID, at the age of 64.
Susan was born in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, on May 19,1956, to Larry and Lily Skerratt James. She was the fourth child of six, the first girl following three boys, leading two sisters.
Susie grew up in Canada, living in Edmonton and Calgary, AB, Vancouver, BC, and Australia for a short time. Sue met Roger in Rexburg, ID, while attending Ricks College. She continued to earn her degree, while Roger served a two year mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in Arcadia, CA. Shortly after his return, they were married March 29, 1978 in the Salt Lake City Utah Temple. ....

Tuscaloosa: Concerns over furthering the spread of COVID-19 have prompted officials with the Tuscaloosa Public Library system to again close its branches. The closures will remain through at least Jan. 5, said library spokesman Vince Bellofatto. All three locations of the Tuscaloosa Public Library are expected to reopen Jan. 6. “TPL made this choice to support the overall health and well-being of Tuscaloosa city, county and Northport and for the safety of our patrons and staff,” Bellofatto said. “It was a very hard decision, as TPL is dedicated to serving the patrons, but the best way to serve our community now, is to help prevent the spread of COVID-19.” Library officials will remain in contact with the library’s board of trustees and, if needed, additional measures might be taken.
