CENTER TWP. Charlie Barath is all in and getting back out. Out playing live music again with his friends, which is what he does for a living. You can catch Barath on Thursday when the noted bluesman and recording artist performs a hometown show at Jacksons Restaurant + Bar in Center Township. Showtime is 5 p.m. In 2017, Barath made a bold, life-changing decision to go all-in on his music career. After years of working construction, the Center resident took a shot at entrepreneurship with his wife Gwenda, opening up a sip-wine-while-you-paint franchise in Lawrenceville. A familiar last name has joined an exclusive group: the 400 Club. Nelson joins the likes of Coffman and Uppgren and Thompson for 400 points in a college career. It’s Jared Nelson, the Pfeiffer lacrosse attackman and son of Scott Nelson, who’s coaching career has spanned multiple decades and included national championships at Nazareth. It’s a good time to be a Nelson right now. Jared Nelson is playing for his brother, Tucker Nelson, who’s in his second year as head coach and has the Falcons at 8-1. Scott Nelson, who coached at Pfeiffer before Tucker took over, is now an assistant at No. 1 Le Moyne, where the other brother Jake is the second-leading point-scorer. The Dolphins scored a crazy OT victory on Wednesday. ....

Full kitchens, energy-efficient construction, and utilities are included in the rent. “We want to end homelessness,” said Gilbert. The eight units off Cochran Drive are the prototype. The goal is to eventually purchase 28 acres across the street to build an additional 210 units, complete with a child care center and other wrap-around services. ....
In the early 1970s, young aspiring Black musicians were scattered throughout Beaver County, western Pennsylvania and, of course, the entire greater Pittsburgh region. This was an era when they targeted their passions and concentrated on becoming the area’s premier musicians. Unlike today s counterparts, yesterday’s young were not fixed on becoming top videogame rompers. Instead, good musicianship provided a viable alternative to youngsters who may have failed on the hoop court, gridiron or simply lacked athletic prowess. In Beaver County, the probability of becoming a professional musician was a devout reality, whereas so was becoming a professional athlete considering the acclaim of Hopewell Township’s Anthony “Hawk” Dorsett, Aliquippa’s Mike Ditka and Beaver Falls’ Joe Willie Namath. In music, Beaver Valley Musician Union Hall of Famers Henry Mancini and the Steals brothers, Melvin and Mervin, also come to mind. ....
