But reality hit home hard last week when Mishra, a rickshaw driver, took a day off from work to queue up outside a vaccination centre, only to be told that he could not get the jab because he was not registered on the CoWin app. He came later, after his college-going son who owns a smartphone booked a slot for him. Mishra, 50, originally from Jaunpur (UP), can be called privileged among his peers as his family owns at least one smartphone and could get the first dose. Thousands of other poor migrants, daily wagers, domestic help and semi-literate workers at construction sites have not got vaccinated yet because they lack access to smartphones. ....

The erratic supply of doses has slowed down immunisation in Mumbai, affecting potential beneficiaries of first as well as second shots. BMC commissioner Iqbal Singh Chahal told TOI he has received a go-ahead from chief minister Uddhav Thackeray to procure stocks for the country’s financial capital. Chahal said the authorities are open to a deal with any approved vaccine manufacturer that comes forward. Apart from Covaxin and Covishield, the civic body will consider Sputnik V, which was developed in Russia and accorded emergency use authorisation in India. It will also consider vaccines developed by Moderna, Pfizer and Johnson & Johnson. ....

According to BEST union members, some staff working for wet lease bus operators were terminated Mumbai: The Brihanmumbai Electricity Supply and Transport (BEST) is unable to manage its buses riding on wet lease. On May 7, over 120 staffers working for wet lease operators went on a sudden protest â with an equal number of buses going off the road. A similar protest took place in the first week of April. The idea of getting buses on wet lease was introduced by former BEST general manager, Surendra Bagde, who was recently transferred. The problems started on Thursday. According to BEST union members, some staff working for wet lease bus operators were terminated. ....
Mumbai: BMC corporators demand walk-ins for second dose On May 5, a massive crowd broke down the barricade at Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) in a mad scramble for vaccination Mumbai: A day after the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) discontinued the walk-in registration at the vaccination centre and announced that beneficiaries will get their doses only if they have confirmed appointments, public representatives appealed to BMC administration to allow walk-in registration for benificiaries who have their second dose due. Earlier on May 5, a massive crowd broke down the barricade at Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) in a mad scramble for vaccination. This incident prompted the BMC administration to come up with new guidelines to prevent overcrowding at vaccination centres. ....
