BMC head office MUMBAI: At a time when the BMC is facing an acute shortage of funds and has had to dip into its reserves, it plans to spend Rs 1.6 crore on renting brand new electric cars for its civic leaders. Instead of buying new e-cars, the BMC has decided to rent these for a period of eight years. By renting the vehicles for eight years, the BMC will end up paying around Rs 32 lakh per car more than double the market price of around Rs 14 lakh for each. TimesView Civic netas must get new cars if their vehicles are very old. The BMC, though, must not spend double the amount on renting cars, when the vehicles’ market price for outright purchase is 50% lower. Given the BMC’s current financial situation, when it has been forced to take an internal loan, the civic body must avoid such fancy spending and maintain austerity. ....
Railway passengers queue up for swab tests at LTT on Wednesday MUMBAI: The BMC started reaching out to all its 227 corporators on Wednesday asking for locations where they may want to set up vaccination centres. Municipal commissioner Iqbal Singh Chahal said all the 227 centres would be open to citizens aged above 18 years. “The 63 existing BMC and government vaccination centres will be available for those in the age category of 45 years plus. New 227 BMC centres will be opened, one in each corporator ward and for all citizens in the 18 years plus category,” said Chahal. Currently, too, there are 73 vaccination centres in private hospitals, which would be increased to 100 to vaccinate all citizens aged above 18. ....
Rise in ICU beds hasn’t kept pace with city’s need MUMBAI: Covid-19 patients and their kin desperately looking for an ICU or ventilator bed has become a common sight in the city these days. The wait can stretch into hours. “Even for patients with respiratory failure, it takes at least six to eight hours, or even more, to get an ICU bed,” a doctor from a private hospital said. In BMC-run Sion hospital, at any given time there are 10 to 15 patients in the emergency department on oxygen support, waiting for an ICU bed. A BMC official said that the turnaround time for an ICU bed is always high. “Patients on ICU beds cannot be discharged,” the official said. ....
