Mumbai: Bombay HC directs BMC standing committee to hold meetings virtually; Opposition leaders disagree Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation Mumbai: An hour after, Bombay High Court (HC) directed the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) Standing committee to conduct its meeting virtually, group leaders of opposition parties have written to the civic administration stating that the meetings should be held physically and not virtually. Ravi Raja - senior Congress corporator and Leader of Opposition (LoP) in the BMC, Rais Shaikh - Samajwadi Party legislator and corporator from Nagpada and Rakhee Jadhav - leader of Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) have collectively written to the standing committee chairman, stating that they don t support the decision of holding meetings online. ....
Ravi Raja MUMBAI: With BMC officials facing fatigue from fighting Covid-19, the Congress has demanded that officials and engineers from agencies like SRA, Mhada and PWD be deployed on Covid-19 duty. In a letter to chief minister Uddhav Thackeray, Congress corporator Ravi Raja, who is the opposition leader in the BMC, said there were thousands of staff members in Mhada, SRA and PWD who should be pressed into service for Covid-19 work. “The BMC staff has been on Covid-19 duty for over a year. They are all feeling massive Covid-19 fatigue and hundreds have been infected with Covid-19 and many have died. Engineers and staff from agencies like SRA, Mhada and PWD have been kept out of Covid duty, but now, in the wake of the second wave, there is a manpower crunch and officials from these agencies must be put on Covid duty,” he said. ....

Mumbaikars from different parts of Central and Southern Mumbai have raised this issue on social media and complained to Brihanmumbai Electricity Supply and Transport (BEST) Undertaking about the same. According to sources in the BEST, there is at least 2-3 per cent out of the total 40000-odd streetlight poles coming under the jurisdiction of the Undertaking. This comes to around 800-1200 such poles that arenât functioning. In fact on social media like Twitter, a campaign called #BattiGul is also seen where people are posting pictures of streetlights that are not functioning along with the locations. ....
