Image Source: IANS News New Delhi, June 27 : Former England cricketer Bob Appleyard, who suffered a miserable childhood including the loss of his father, stepmother and two sisters in a gas leak when he was 15 was born on this day in Yorkshire in 1924. Appleyard, who could bowl fast-medium and off-spinners with exactly the same action, was touted among the country s best bowlers in the 1950s, and despite his career almost getting destroyed by illness and injury, he went on to take 31 wickets in the nine Tests he played and another 708 wickets in 152 First-class games. ....

His father Matt played in the same game. Made a century for England under 15s later that summer. 2007: Made his Yorkshire Academy and second-team debuts in the same summer, scoring seven and eight respectively. 3 February 2021 Sir Geoffrey Boycott believes Joe Root has every chance of doubling up as he prepares to reach a “special” 100 Test cap milestone on Friday. Boycott has praised his fellow Yorkshireman’s career achievements to date, but insists the 30-year-old has so much more to give English Cricket. When he leads England out for the first Test of four against India in Chennai, Root will become the 15th England player to play 100 Tests or more. Sir Geoffrey is one of the previous 14 having played 108 Tests between 1964 and 1982, as are fellow knights Ian Botham, Andrew Strauss and Alastair Cook. The latter leads the way with 161 appearances and leads the way from Root’s current team-mates Jimmy Anderson (157) and Stuart Broad (144). ....
