Meanwhile, state law has ended Grand’s local mask mandate, leaving businesses and organizations to make their own public health decisions. Notes on the May 4 Grand County Commission Meeting: Noise, overnight accommodation and renewable energy

At their May 4 regular meeting, the Grand County Commission approved the hire of a consultant to continue advising and training the county on noise ordinance and enforcement issues, voted to be an anchor community in a statewide renewable energy program, and discussed how to handle expansions and remodels for overnight accommodations businesses.

Les Blomberg of the nonprofit Noise Pollution Clearinghouse has been helping both Moab City and Grand County rework their noise ordinances in an attempt to address the traffic noise that has been the subject of many residentsâ complaints, letters, petitions and debates at the local and state levels. County Attorney Christina Sloan said that Blomberg, if hired, could continue to assist the county in helping to train law enforcement officers in noise enforcement techniques and also help facilitate a voluntary noise testing event that the county is holding on May 29. ....

The Bureau of Land Management completed some minimal emergency treatment on the Birthing Rock petroglyph panel on Wednesday. The site is at least 1,000 years old and was found marred by obscenities earlier this week. So what do conservators consider before attempting to mitigate damage at a cultural site like Birthing Rock? Today on the news, we speak with former BLM Moab archeologist Don Montoya. He currently works as a consultant with land management agencies and has plenty of experience in damage assessment. Montoya says this is not the first time the Birthing Rock panel has suffered vandalism.

Ranked-choice voting heads to Moab

Moab City will use a ranked choice voting ballot for city council elections later this year, the council voted unanimously on Tuesday, with help from the Utah County Elections Team as part of the Municipal Alternative Voting Methods Pilot Project.
âOne of the selling points is that ranked choice voting brings people together,â said Josh Daniels, chief deputy clerk auditor for Utah County, at a special meeting on April 20.
âOne of the theories is that rather than a campaign strategy rooted in burning down your opponent.you can have more collaborative campaigns,â said Daniels. The Utah County Elections Team is working to debut ranked choice voting in several cities and counties across the state. ....

Moab City passes long-awaited noise ordinance

The Moab City Council passed a long-awaited noise ordinance at their regular meeting on April 27 meant to address general noise complaints from residents across the city, specifically noise stemming from off-highway vehicles. Councilmembers ironed out specific time windows and decibel limits for recreational activity on Tuesday to finalize the ordinance and now look forward to gauging its impact.
âWeâre trying to embrace our full spectrum of recreation opportunities that we provide here in Moab. I want the motorized community to hear loud and clear from me and this council that weâre not trying to restrict or reject this type of recreation,â Mayor Emily Niehaus said at the meeting. ....
