May is Asian Pacific American Heritage Month, a time dedicated to celebrating the culture, traditions and history of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders.

The rich cultural heritage of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders (AAPI) dates back thousands of years. Both groups have shaped the history of the United States and have had their lives dramatically influenced by moments in its history.
Asian Americans include U.S. citizens whose origins are from China, Japan, Taiwan, Korea, Mongolia, Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, Thailand, India, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, Myanmar, Bhutan, the Philippines, Indonesia and Malaysia, as well as Native Hawaiians and Pacific Islanders from Samoa, Fiji, Guam and the Northern Mariana Islands. According to the Pew Research Center, Asian Americans were the fastest-growing population in the U.S. between 2000 and 2019. ....

History, memory, nature: Chuang explores the Asian American experience through poetry

In virtual reality, I transform my dorm space into a home away from home with picture collages, amusing laptop stickers and letters from loved ones posted on my wall.

I arrive at the cabin in Ellijay, Georgia, where I worked on my thesis in September 2020. In the backyard, I see dozens of ancient trees; those trees are a portal into a different world, connected with generations of Southern families and forest creatures.

As part of the editing process, I hand-edit each poem because it is easier for me to find typos or grammatical errors. Under advice from my adviser, I also print out each poem to place them thematically on my wall. I move them around into different groupings as I envision my poetry manuscript s overall framework. ....
