PINSON The Pinson Valley boys saw it come to an end on Friday night at home. Two days after knocking off top-ranked Hartselle, the No. 7-ranked Indians fell to Scottsboro 69-67 in the second round of the Class 6A playoffs, ending their season at 20-5 overall. Due to multiple postponements on the topside of the Northwest bracket, Scottsboro is unsure who its Elite 8 opponent will be. Possibilities include No. 6 Clay-Chalkville, Muscle Shoals, Hazel Green and Buckhorn. The Wildcats will play one of them next Tuesday in the Northwest Regional finals at Wallace State Community College in Hanceville. The game went to overtime on Friday tied at 59, and Scottsboro opened the extra period on a 5-0 run that would prove too much to overcome for the home team. Wildcats senior Javaris Branford sank three attempts in two free-throw appearances in the final seconds to preserve the playoff win. ....

The Moody boys on Monday completed the season sweep of St. Clair County with a 50-29 victory, which follows a 49-47 decision over the Saints last Friday night. On Monday in Class 5A, Area 11 play, Blue Devil guard Davion Dovier delivered a team-high 11 points followed by forward Carson Dillashaw with nine. Moody notched a non-area win on Tuesday, blowing by Pell City 75-58. Senior Peyton Ingram scored 17 points to go with 13 more from junior Mason Trimm. The Pinson Valley boys have been on a tear that continues with two more wins already this week. The second-ranked Indians (15-2, 4-0) started on Monday with a 56-53 overtime victory over No. 3 Shades Valley in the MLK Roundball Classic at Fairfield. ....

The Springville boys hit the road on Friday night and came back with a 55-31 area win over Pell City. The Tigers (18-3, 4-1) finished with 15 assists on 22 made field goals as they pulled things out of reach. Springville started both halves strong with 16 points scored in the first period and 18 points in the third. The visitors led 24-10 at the break and stretched it to 42-17 after three complete. Jake Goolsby paced the Springville offense with 11 points, followed by Chase Higgins with 10 and Pearson Baldwin with nine. The Tigers have now won 13 straight after falling to Boaz 58-55 two days before Christmas. ....
Several boys and girls basketball teams were in play on Tuesday night. The Hewitt-Trussville girls claimed their first Class 7A, Area 6 win on Tuesday night in Hoover. The second-ranked Huskies (18-2, 1-1) bounced back after a 6-point first frame with 16 points in the second and eventually pulled away with a 49-39 victory over No. 6-ranked Spain Park. Senior Amiya Payne led the way with 20 points to go with 11 from Audreonia Benson and 10 from Jordan Hunter on the road. Hewitt-Trussville is back in league play on Friday night at Gadsden City. The Hewitt-Trussville boys slid to 0-2 in Class 7A, Area 6 play on Tuesday night thanks to a 70-44 loss at No. 4 Spain Park. ....

Crosstown rival Clay-Chalkville (9-4, 0-1) made the short trip over, as the Indians scored 37 second-half points en route to a 61-39 victory in Mike Dutton Gymnasium. Pinson Valley (9-2, 2-0) saw four players score in double figures, including to JoJo James (19), TC Coner (16), Joshua Williams (13) and Moe Calloway (10). Calloway, a senior wing, also secured 10 boards to complete the double-double. The visiting Cougars defended well in the first half, leading 12-10 through the first eight minutes and later going to the break down 24-18. However, they struggled to defend the perimeter down the home stretch while Pinson Valley buried six second-half triples to stretch things out of reach. ....
