PINSON The Pinson Valley boys saw it come to an end on Friday night at home. Two days after knocking off top-ranked Hartselle, the No. 7-ranked Indians fell to Scottsboro 69-67 in the second round of the Class 6A playoffs, ending their season at 20-5 overall. Due to multiple postponements on the topside of the Northwest bracket, Scottsboro is unsure who its Elite 8 opponent will be. Possibilities include No. 6 Clay-Chalkville, Muscle Shoals, Hazel Green and Buckhorn. The Wildcats will play one of them next Tuesday in the Northwest Regional finals at Wallace State Community College in Hanceville. The game went to overtime on Friday tied at 59, and Scottsboro opened the extra period on a 5-0 run that would prove too much to overcome for the home team. Wildcats senior Javaris Branford sank three attempts in two free-throw appearances in the final seconds to preserve the playoff win. ....
By Erik Harris, sports editor PINSON After splitting a two-game regular season series, the Pinson Valley and Clay-Chalkville boys settled the tie on Friday night in the Class 6A, Area 12 tournament finals. In a battle of top 10 teams, the sixth-ranked Cougars (19-4) traveled into Mike Dutton Gymnasium and escaped with a hard-fought victory to secure the area championship and lock up home-court advantage next Tuesday in their playoff opener. Senior Isaiah Daniel ripped the game-winning trey, his defense held twice on the other end and Clay-Chalkville claimed the league title by a final of 53-50. Daniel, who was named to the all-tournament team following the contest, pulled up from the right wing to break a 50-50 deadlock with 17 seconds remaining. ....
By Erik Harris, sports editor PINSON After squeezing into the ASWA top-10 poll for the first time this week, the Clay-Chalkville boys basketball team celebrated with its biggest win of the season. The No. 10-ranked Cougars (13-4, 3-1) defended their home floor on Thursday night, knocking off second-ranked Pinson Valley 59-51. The win comes in Class 6A, Area 12 play and avenges a 61-39 loss to the Indians (15-3, 4-1) on Jan. 7 at Mike Dutton Gymnasium. After a back-and-forth opening period, Clay-Chalkville separated a little going into the break thanks to a 16-point second quarter. Senior point guard Donovan Shangase started the surge with two quick baskets in the second, including an and-1 that put his Cougars out front 19-13. They trailed 13-12 when the quarter began. ....
