State of Maine: Political sharks are circling the 2nd Congressional District

State of Maine: Political sharks are circling the 2nd Congressional District
Just six months from the last congressional election, attention is turning to the next one in November 2022. Republicans think they smell blood in the water around Democratic Congressman Jared Golden. That could be premature.
Maine’s 2nd Congressional District is mostly rural, covering about 80 percent of the vast and less populated parts of Maine. Golden has won the 2nd Congressional District twice now. A second win is usually enough to secure a lock on the seat but Golden knows full well that this is not a certainty.
His first race saw him up against two-term incumbent Republican Bruce Poliquin, along with two write-in candidates. None of the four got a majority of the vote. For the first time ever, ranked choice voting decided the outcome of a congressional race. In the first incumbent upset since 1916, Golden took Poliquin’s seat 50.6 percent to 49.4  ....

Auburn: Auburn University officials say they will reinstate the school’s bass fishing team this spring following allegations that it repeatedly violated COVID-19 policies. The school had initially suspended the team for the entire year but agreed to the shorter punishment after a meeting that involved school administrators and team members. The team violated the travel and events policy in July 2020, February 2021 and March 2021, school officials said in a memo. The team will now be able to return to competition April 22. During the suspension, no member of the team will be allowed to compete, recruit or represent the Auburn University Bass Fishing Team. “I am thankful that Auburn University and its administration were willing to listen to us and consider all of the facts with an open mind,” said Logan Parks, president of the Auburn University Bass Fishing Club. “We have reached an agreement, and, most importantly, th ....

Valley News - Out-of-state students left in limbo on shots

Out-of-state students left in limbo on shots
Modified: 3/31/2021 10:20:42 PM
HANOVER While the Twin States’ governors have both said they don’t plan to make COVID-19 vaccines available to out-of-state college students, the students and their supporters may prevail in the end.
Dartmouth College Provost Joseph Helble in a Community Conversation on Wednesday urged out-of-state students to “sit tight for a week or two” before planning trips home to get vaccinated as Dartmouth officials, along with leaders from other New Hampshire colleges, urge Gov. Chris Sununu to set a time frame to vaccinate students at residential colleges.
Helble said he was “cautiously optimistic” that Sununu might be convinced to allow students to receive both required shots in New Hampshire before they leave at the end of spring term. Spring term final exams end June 8 at Dartmouth and commencement is planned for June 13. ....

Monadnock Ledger-Transcript - Universities push back against out-of-state students inability to access COVID vaccine

Nick Fitzgerald, the student body president at University of New Hampshire, said he wanted to get the COVID-19 vaccine as soon as possible.
Mostly to regain some semblance of normalcy in his life but also to set an example for his fellow students.
But last week, at Gov. Chris Sununu’s weekly press conference, Fitzgerald, a New York resident, learned that he and thousands of his out-of-state peers would not be eligible to sign up for a vaccine appointment on Friday with the rest of his age cohort.
“If you’re a resident of Colorado but you’re going to school here, no, you cannot get the vaccine,” Sununu said at the press conference. “You can go to Colorado and get the vaccine for Colorado residents but you will not qualify for the vaccine here. This is for permanent New Hampshire residents.” ....

Out-of-state college students still appear to be out of luck when it comes to getting the coronavirus vaccine in New Hampshire.
Gov. Chris Sununu said last week that only New Hampshire residents would be eligible for the vaccine when eligibility expands Friday to include anyone age 16 and over, and that out-of-state college students should return to their home states to get vaccinated. He said Wednesday that position hasn’t changed, despite an announcement from a nonprofit consortium that includes 21 public and private campuses.
