MLB Trade Rumors The Tigers announced that they have agreed to sign free agent right-hander Anibal Sanchez to a five-year contract that includes a 2018 club option. The deal is valued at $80MM according to, Bob Nightengale of USA Today, who first reported the deal (on Twitter). “Anibal pitched tremendously for us down the stretch and during the post-season,” Tigers president and GM Dave Dombrowski said. “He strengthens our starting rotation and we are pleased to have him back with the Tigers organization.” Agent Gene Mato represents Sanchez, who agrees to terms with Detroit after coming close to a deal with the Cubs. Cubs ownership and Theo Epstein offered Sanchez a $77MM contract in Miami last week, but the Tigers jumped in and won the bidding, Nightengale reports (on Twitter). The Red Sox also talked to Sanchez, but didn t go as high as $80MM, Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com reports (on Twitter). ....

He signed with the organization as a free agent in February 2003 and posted a 3.09 ERA in nine relief appearances his final ones in the big leagues. Though he was born in Mexico, Amezaga attended Miami High. The Amazin Amezaga served two stints with the Marlins (2006-09, 11), slashing .255/.315/.339 with 39 doubles, 17 triples and eight homers in 437 games. The fan favorite appeared at every position except catcher and pitcher during a nine-year career. (Miami) A second-round Draft pick by the Marlins in 2002 out of Miami Southridge High, Andino played sparingly for them during the first four seasons of his 10-year career. He slashed .201/.250/.299 in 79 games before finding some success with the Orioles over the next four seasons. Andino returned to Miami in 2016, going 7-for-24 in 13 games. ....

The award has been given every year since 1990 in memory of the former Red Sox outfielder, whose career was tragically shortened by a beanball in 1967 and whose life ended in 1990 at the age of 45. It is awarded to a “Major Leaguer who has overcome adversity through the attributes of spirit, determination, and courage that were trademarks of Tony C.” Voting was conducted by a 15-person committee comprised of media members, Major League Baseball executives, Red Sox officials, and Conigliaro’s brothers, Richie and Billy. ....
