Staff writer WELLSBURG At a special meeting Friday Wellsburg Council moved to cancel this year’s primary election and certified candidates for the June 8 general election. In each of the last five election years, Wellsburg council members have agreed not to hold the primary when no more than two candidates had filed for any elected office. City officials noted the move saves the city up to $5,000 in election costs. This year no more than one candidate has filed for the offices of mayor, police chief, collector-treasurer and council seats representing each of the city’s four wards. Candidates for the seven offices are: Danny Dudley, mayor; Mike Allman, police chief; Karen Aracich, collector-treasurer; Jack Kins, 1st Ward; Mary Margaret Rosso, 2nd Ward; Tom Gaudio, 3rd Ward; and Charlie Harris, 4th Ward. ....
Staff writer Follansbee voters will be asked this year to choose from candidates for mayor and three council seats, while candidates for Wellsburg elections appear to be unopposed. Incumbent David Velegol Jr. of 400 Heather Moor Drive, will face challenger John Schwertfeger of 601 Gilbert Ave. Schwertfeger once served as the city’s police chief. Some students in the San Dieguito Union High School District are pushing back against a plan to re-open. Students say the district s plan doesn t go far enough to keep everyone safe and would require teachers to be back on campus five days a week by the end of next month. On Thursday, the students held a protest at Earl Warren Middle School, gathering outside a closed-door meeting hoping that the board would hear their cries. This week the board voted 3-2 to resume on-campus instruction starting with one day a week on January 4 and an option to go five days a week by January 27. Teachers would be required to be on campus. ....
