Wellsburg Council cancels primary election | News, Sports, Jobs

Staff writer WELLSBURG At a special meeting Friday Wellsburg Council moved to cancel this year’s primary election and certified candidates for the June 8 general election. In each of the last five election years, Wellsburg council members have agreed not to hold the primary when no more than two candidates had filed for any elected office. City officials noted the move saves the city up to $5,000 in election costs. This year no more than one candidate has filed for the offices of mayor, police chief, collector-treasurer and council seats representing each of the city’s four wards. Candidates for the seven offices are: Danny Dudley, mayor; Mike Allman, police chief; Karen Aracich, collector-treasurer; Jack Kins, 1st Ward; Mary Margaret Rosso, 2nd Ward; Tom Gaudio, 3rd Ward; and Charlie Harris, 4th Ward.

Wellsburg discusses collector-treasurer pay, police restructuring | News, Sports, Jobs

Staff writer WELLSBURG On Tuesday, Wellsburg Council supported a higher salary for the city’s collector-treasurer and restructuring of the police department. In December, Collector-Treasurer Andrea Morris requested a raise, noting her salary is lower than assistant department heads at City Hall. But council members noted because Morris’ position is an elected one, any change to her salary can’t go into effect until after her present term, which ends on June 30. After that, whoever is elected to the office in the city’s June 8 election will receive that pay. But council learned on Tuesday that Morris has chosen to resign from the position, effective Feb. 15, to accept a position as assistant to newly appointed Brooke County Magistrate Shannon Price.

The city has been awarded about $101,282 from the funds, which were approved by Congress earlier this year to provide financial relief to local governments impacted by the pandemic. City Manager Steve Maguschak told council at the videoconferenced meeting the city’s volunteer fire department has requested about $50,522 to replace six expired air packs and related equipment. He added about $28,421 could go toward the purchase for the city’s police department of a Ford Explorer and related equipment and decals.
