COUNCIL SEAT FILLED â On Tuesday long-time resident Jerry Nichols was appointed to fill the 1st Ward Council seat held by Danny Dudley, who resigned to serve as interim mayor following the death of Sue Simonetti. It was the first council meeting presided by Dudley and the first in several months in which council members met in person.
WELLSBURG The last five months have been a time of change for city officials, and Tuesday was no different as Wellsburg Council gathered in person for the first time in several months.
The panel had been meeting virtually because of the pandemic, but a majority returned to council chambers for the first meeting led by Interim Mayor Danny Dudley.

WELLSBURG At a special meeting Friday Wellsburg Council moved to cancel this year’s primary election and certified candidates for the June 8 general election.
In each of the last five election years, Wellsburg council members have agreed not to hold the primary when no more than two candidates had filed for any elected office. City officials noted the move saves the city up to $5,000 in election costs.
This year no more than one candidate has filed for the offices of mayor, police chief, collector-treasurer and council seats representing each of the city’s four wards.
Candidates for the seven offices are: Danny Dudley, mayor; Mike Allman, police chief; Karen Aracich, collector-treasurer; Jack Kins, 1st Ward; Mary Margaret Rosso, 2nd Ward; Tom Gaudio, 3rd Ward; and Charlie Harris, 4th Ward.

WELLSBURG Wellsburg Council Tuesday gave its blessing to plans to honor local veterans with banners along state Route 2 and considered canceling the city’s primary election.
Council heard from Eric Fithyan and Donna Sullivan, who proposed inviting families and others to sponsor banners bearing the names and images of local veterans.
Fithyan said MonPower has been asked for permission to hang the 21 inch by 48 inch banners on 100 utility poles along the highway within the city.
Pending the company’s permission, he asked if city crews would hang the banners, which also could include each veteran’s military branch and military conflicts in which he or she served.
