Oklahoma City budget adopted with a record $240 million for police

Oklahoman
The Oklahoma City voted 7-2 Tuesday to adopt a $1.65 billion annual budget, down slightly overall but including a record $240 million for police.
A year after dozens of residents called for restraining police spending, criticism was muted. City Manager Craig Freeman s budget was adopted as proposed.
“We are very thankful for Mayor Holt and the six city councilors that voted to approve the highest police budget in history, said John George, the police union president
It is good to see that the vast majority of the council prioritized the safety of the citizens of OKC over politics, he said by text after the vote. ....

Mike Bloomberg: The Good Philanthropist? | Opinion

Guillermo S. Hava ’24, a Crimson Associate Editorial editor, lives in Winthrop House. His column appears on alternate Wednesdays.
I’ve never considered myself a huge fan of Michael R. Bloomberg — quite an unenviable position for someone trying to enter a dying media market. His political career always struck me as less than ideal, his troubling past statements as, well, extremely troubling. He’s hardly the kind of person I’d envision as the ideal Harvard donor, let alone the main funder of an entire, extremely influential University program.
So when the former New York City mayor and graduate of Harvard Business School decided to expand his philanthropic commitment to our school last month, I knew the donation was worth inspecting. The donation in question? A massive $150 million to create the Harvard Bloomberg Center for Cities program, building on the work of the year-long Bloomberg Harvard City Leadership Initiative that offers leadership traini ....

Oklahoma elections: Tens of thousands spent on OKC City Council races

Oklahoman
The race to succeed longtime Councilman Larry McAtee in far southwest Oklahoma City s Ward 3 has become a financial slugfest.
According to campaign finance reports filed this week, Jessica Martinez-Brooks and Barbara Young have raised a combined $156,000 and, as of this past weekend, had spent $125,000.
Martinez-Brooks and Young were the top vote-getters in the Feb. 9 primary, advancing to Tuesday s Ward 3 runoff. One will become the first woman ever to represent Ward 3.
In Tuesday s other runoff, Shay Varnell, a city traffic commissioner, faced Bradley Carter in the race to succeed James Greiner in far northwest Oklahoma City s Ward 1.
Varnell had raised about $28,000 and spent about $25,700. Carter missed Monday s reporting deadline; in his latest report, filed with the City Clerk Feb. 1, he said he had raised about $5,500. ....
