Two new faces will be sworn in on Tuesday to Oklahoma City s City Council. Councilor-elect Bradley Carter will serve Ward 1 and Councilor-elect Barbara Young will serve Ward 3 for four year terms. Carter owns coffee roasting company Grounds for Compassion at MacArthur Boulevard and NW 50th Street. He started the business as a way of providing farmers a job in Haiti. His company now roasts coffee from nine different countries. “It’s something we take the proceeds from and utilize within the outreach of our community, whether that s homeless outreaches, recovery outreaches,” Carter said. Anyone can come into Grounds for Compassion and get a free coffee and stay for a Bible study. ....
Oklahoman The race to succeed longtime Councilman Larry McAtee in far southwest Oklahoma City s Ward 3 has become a financial slugfest. According to campaign finance reports filed this week, Jessica Martinez-Brooks and Barbara Young have raised a combined $156,000 and, as of this past weekend, had spent $125,000. Martinez-Brooks and Young were the top vote-getters in the Feb. 9 primary, advancing to Tuesday s Ward 3 runoff. One will become the first woman ever to represent Ward 3. In Tuesday s other runoff, Shay Varnell, a city traffic commissioner, faced Bradley Carter in the race to succeed James Greiner in far northwest Oklahoma City s Ward 1. Varnell had raised about $28,000 and spent about $25,700. Carter missed Monday s reporting deadline; in his latest report, filed with the City Clerk Feb. 1, he said he had raised about $5,500. ....
Carter, Young win OKC Council seats in runoff By: Kathryn McNutt The Journal Record April 7, 2021 Bradley Carter Barbara Young OKLAHOMA CITY – Bradley Carter and Barbara Young will begin four-year terms on the Oklahoma City Council next week after winning their respective races in Tuesday’s runoff election. The results are unofficial until certified by the Oklahoma County Election Board. Carter will represent Ward 1, which encompasses much of northwest Oklahoma City. Carter operates a local coffee business with his wife. He describes himself as a supporter of business and industry, a protector of gun rights, and a champion for funding police and first responders. He said his priorities are roads, infrastructure, transparency and responsive leadership. ....
