Residents of Asian descent targeted in break-ins, said DA Ryan

What happened and when?
According to Chief John Carmichael, who has only been with the Newton Police Department for one month, during the last five break-ins there were forced entries through first floor windows and second floor balconies.
Jewelry, handbags, cash, and heirlooms were usually taken during the weekend incidents. Families were gone from their homes for a short period of time during the break-ins, said Carmichael.
Between Jan. 1 and July 15 this year, there were 46 break-ins in Newton, said Carmichael. The last five, which occurred between June 13 and July 10, happened to families of Asian descent. Of the other 41, there were two incidents where a thief or thieves broke into a home of a person of Asian descent, he said. ....

In a way, Philip D’Avanza is a time traveler. He repairs clocks — concentrating on the enormous timepieces nestled high up in places of worship and public buildings like Newton’s City Hall, where many have marked the passage of time for decades.
Plying his trade means D’Avanza, of Goffstown, N.H., often will climb high up into buildings in order to examine the workings of a historic tower clock, like the 1809 timepiece he worked on at the Old Groton Meeting House in 2019. ....

Gun shop faces petition, possible new zoning in Newton

Wicked Local
With a gun shop looking to open at 709 Washington St., next to Garden Remedies, a marijuana dispensary, many city councilors and upset residents are taking parallel steps to prevent this from happening.
There are currently no restrictions on where a gun store can be located in Newton. Proposed zoning amendments were released on Friday, April 16. The City Council, which was due to meet on April 20, will likely refer these amendments to the Zoning and Planning Committee (ZAP) for a public hearing on May 10, according to the city’s Law Department.
The proposed amendments “would only allow firearms sales related uses in certain zoning districts in the city,” according to an email from Mayor Ruthanne Fuller. They “will also require firearms sales uses to be approved by special permit by the City Council. Finally, it will create specific special permit criteria, including a buffer zone between a firearms dealer and residences and schools.” ....
