City Council gets aquatic center update, approves art sales during downtown art walk
Kirksville Daily Express
The Kirksville Aquatic Center remains on schedule for its new opening date of June 19, but Mother Nature is toying with workers yet again.
During Monday’s meeting, he said a lot of construction has been completed over the last two weeks, particularly at the pumphouse and the outdoor pool decks. The roof of the building is nearly complete, fence posts are in place for the campus perimeter, and work has begun on the parking lot.
Sadler said the wintry weather on Tuesday and Wednesday could pose a challenge because pool painters are on-site to paint the outdoor pool, but it isn’t warm enough for them to do that. So they have to wait for warmer temperatures, and that paint has to sit for 28 days before the pool can be filled with water. ....

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s messages of unity and equality remain true more than 50 years after his assassination, including in Kirksville.
The 2021 Martin Luther King Jr. Virtual CommUnity Celebration is called “You Belong Here, All Are Welcome Here.” There is a theme for each year’s celebration and this year’s piggybacks off the YouBelongHereKV community group that started last year. That group started after hateful signs were found in Kirksville, and then raised money to buy diverse books for schools.
“This is such a time where unity is so important,” said Bertha Thomas, the leader of the Martin Luther King Jr. Citywide Committee. “The nation, the country and our community are so in need of thinking about positive things and feelings that this seems perfect to do.” ....
