New Kirksville Aquatic Center finally opens

Kirksville has an open aquatic center once again. After a voter-approved sales tax to fund the project and a lengthy design process where the financials were tested, construction began last February. Then a global pandemic began, parts of construction were delayed, materials arrived late, and the grand opening was pushed from Memorial Day weekend to June. And even the weather couldn’t say no to adding one more roadblock, with the ceremonial opening moved from June 26 to June 28. But those are all in the rearview mirror now following a soft opening over the weekend and a ribbon-cutting on Monday night. Parks and Recreation Director Rodney Sadler thanked city staff members, construction workers and architects on Monday night. And after addressing those people, he thanked the citizens of Kirksville for supporting the project and remaining patient and welcomed them to the new Kirksville Aquatic Center.

City Council gets aquatic center update, approves art sales during downtown art walk

City Council gets aquatic center update, approves art sales during downtown art walk Kirksville Daily Express The Kirksville Aquatic Center remains on schedule for its new opening date of June 19, but Mother Nature is toying with workers yet again. During Monday’s meeting, he said a lot of construction has been completed over the last two weeks, particularly at the pumphouse and the outdoor pool decks. The roof of the building is nearly complete, fence posts are in place for the campus perimeter, and work has begun on the parking lot.  Sadler said the wintry weather on Tuesday and Wednesday could pose a challenge because pool painters are on-site to paint the outdoor pool, but it isn’t warm enough for them to do that. So they have to wait for warmer temperatures, and that paint has to sit for 28 days before the pool can be filled with water.
