Councillors vote not to censure Wellington mayor over code of conduct breach

The investigation found Foster breached the council’s code of conduct by attempting to share private information with at least two councillors before a vote on whether to sell and lease council land for a planned $500 million development at Shelly Bay.
The investigation was launched in November following a complaint from Condie, one of the councillors Foster tried to share the information with.
The information contained Foster’s notes from a phone conversation in April 2019 with a former staff member, in which that person alleged another former staff member had pressured council officers to deem the narrow Shelly Bay Rd suitable for the development. ....

Confusion reigns during Brooklyn Hill cycleway construction

“There are no signs to say ‘use it’ or ‘don’t use it’ and there are cars parked on the lower bit,” said Underwood.
Underwood felt that reducing the median buffer between vehicles and routeing the lane between the footpath and parking spaces in sections of the lane compromised safety for cyclists and traffic alike.
“There’s no room for error. I’m all for safe cycle lanes that don’t disadvantage every other road user,” she said.
Greg Crott said the cycleway was “a long way” from completion and was typified by a lack of communication at every level. He said the work started on May 3 without any signage to warn road users. ....

The 1.7 kilometre Island Bay cycleway opened in 2016 and was immediately controversial with campaigning to remove it entirely, claiming its kerbside layout has made The Parade more dangerous by limiting motorists visibility and reducing their road space.
Wellington has since pushed on with new cycleways around the city, largely with less public outcry. It recently got $1million from Waka Kotahi NZTA to do four projects to make the city “safer, healthier and more people-friendly”. The Brooklyn trial would use $316,250 of that. ....

She hoped that would in turn change the conversations she had with members of the public.
“I’m looking forward to going into my community and people not saying they feel sorry for me when they realise I’m the deputy mayor,” Free said.
“I find that really hard to deal with when I go shopping, or to church, or to meet people, and they say to me, ‘Oh, it’s lovely to meet you, but I feel so sorry for you’. ....
