Wellington City Council considers referendum on water reforms

Councillors agree to city-wide footpath parking ban in Wellington

MONIQUE FORD/Stuff The change has occurred following complaints about increased risks to pedestrians and a lack of space for emergency vehicles. (File photo) It will revoke a 2005 council decision that permitted footpath parking anywhere in Wellington apart from the central city and suburban centres, provided at least one metre of footpath space was left fee. The feedback found that just 35 of the 246 submitters who commented on the idea opposed the change. Those in favour said it was important to keep road space free for waste and emergency services vehicles, and for pedestrians to have unobstructed footpath access. Only councillors Diane Calvert, Simon Woolf, and Nicola Young voted against the new bylaw, which included the footpath parking ban.
