By Sherry Hamilton on June 9, 2021 COVID-19 case rates continued to improve in the Three Rivers Health District over the past week, with only two to three cases reported per day for all 10 jurisdictions combined. “Our environment is much safer at this time for everyone,” said Dr. Richard Williams, medical director for the district, in his weekly pandemic update. About 58 percent of adults over 18 in the district have had at least one dose of the vaccine, he said, while over 80 percent of residents 65 and older have had at least one dose. Locally, 47.2 percent of Gloucester residents, or 17,642 people, have received at least one dose of the vaccine, while 40.6 percent, or 15,169 people, were fully vaccinated as of Wednesday. In Mathews, 4,608 people, of 52.2 percent of residents, have received at least one dose, and 46.6 percent, or 4,120 people, were fully vaccinated. In Middlesex, those numbers were 5,706 people, or 53.9 percent, with at least one dose, and 5, ....

Melany Slaughter on June 9, 2021 Rylan Allcorn is pictured above running in the boys’ 4x800m relay which Gloucester placed in third overall with a time of 8:45.12. Siblings Tanner Baker and Mya Baker each took first place in the boys’ and girls’ 1600m races, respectively, in the 2021 VHSL Class 5A South Region track meet, which took place last Saturday at Gloucester High School. Tanner ran the dash with a time of 4:36.31 and Mya finished the race with a time of 5:40.97. Nicole Pinder also finished the girls’ 1600 with a time of 5:56.08, followed by Emily Shipe (6:25.09) and Layla Angles (6:48.70). Owen Hogge also competed in the boys’ 1600m dash with a time of 5:31.06. ....
By Sherry Hamilton on June 9, 2021 Former Governor Terry R. McAuliffe easily won the nomination to be the 2021 Democratic candidate for Virginia governor during Tuesday’s Democratic Primary Election. With just 454,664 people voting in the election statewide, McAuliffe took 61.78 percent of all ballots cast in the gubernatorial race. His next closest competitor was Senator Jennifer McClellan, who garnered just 11.59 percent of the vote. McAuliffe will now face off against Republican candidate Glenn Youngkin in the November election. Hala S. Ayala, a former cybersecurity specialist with the federal government, won the nomination to be the Democratic candidate for Lieutenant Governor, carrying 37.36 percent of the vote, with Sam Rasoul coming in second, with 24.24 percent. Ayala will run against Republican candidate Winsome Sears in November. ....
Posted On June 9, 2021 Fishing activity heated up in May, with a number of citation fish of various species caught by residents and registered in the Virginia Saltwater Fishing Tournament. According to the latest list in vasaltwaterjournal.com, these local anglers received citations: John Moore of Saluda, 46” black drum caught May 8 off Oyster on the Eastern Shore; Three blueline tilefish caught by Jason E. Hall of Mathews, Jonathan Dehoux of Mathews, and Carter Cooke of Hudgins, on May 15 at Norfolk Canyon. The fish weighed 16 pounds 6 ounces, 10 pounds six ounces, and 13 pounds nine ounces, respectively. Michael Mahler of Hayes caught a 73” shark on May 7 in Norfolk Canyon for a citation. ....
