BUFFALO, N.Y. (WKBW) — Matthew Paulk may be just 24 years old, but this graduate of City Honors in Buffalo has already accomplished a lot.
After several years of hard work, Paulk has started a non-profit that helps senior citizens in our community.
It’s called Charities Pooled Trust – and it helps them navigate through the confusing world of health care benefits, and understand what services they re eligible to receive. ....

With at least 280 people estimated to be living outside in Lawrence, city and county leaders are preparing for a deeper discussion about the resources and coordination needed to address the issue of homelessness.
As part of its study session Tuesday, the Lawrence City Commission received an approximately three-hour presentation on the various services supporting people experiencing homelessness as well as efforts being made by Douglas County leaders. Speaking to the frustration that has been voiced by some in the community about an inadequate response, Mayor Brad Finkeldei said that he hoped the community would soon be making progress. ....

A woven blanket is neatly hung like a curtain inside the window of the covered truck bed, a space that provides only enough room to crouch but for years has served as one man’s home.
Edward, who did not want to use his last name, said that when he checked into the city’s hotel shelter program this winter it was the first time he’d had four walls and a door since at least 2005. An older man with a wiry white and gray beard poking out from his mask, Edward said he’d been living in his truck when he had a stroke in early February, and it was someone at the hospital who told him about the program. ....

LAWRENCE, Kan. — The City of Lawrence might have an answer to the increasing need in their homeless community.
How do you potentially build a temporary shelter for folks who may be in transition so it may lead to future opportunities down the road? Derek Rogers, director of the Lawrence Parks and Recreation Department, said.

Camp Woody, a permitted campsite at Woody Park in Lawrence, Kansas. It s made up of 20 tents for people experiencing homelessness. It sits next door to Lawrence Memorial Hospital. ....

It may not have been perfect, but Leslie Vaughn’s delicate financial balance had always worked for her until this year.
Most of the time she had two jobs – “I’m not afraid of hard work,” she says – and her partner got contract work cleaning for businesses. The couple needed to replace the car, but a tax refund was supposed to take care of that. ....
