Topeka and Lawrence have been flirting with each other for decades.
“Lawrence put a ring on it,” said Topeka Mayor Michelle De La Isla after singing her version of “Single Ladies” by Beyoncé.
De La Isla’s version of the song was encouraging all the “single cities” in northeast Kansas to get together, which is happening as De La Isla and Lawrence Mayor Brad Finkeldei prepare for a road trip.
The two mayors were joined by members of the Lawrence Chamber and the Greater Topeka Partnership to announce a joint trip to learn from the Arkansas cities of Bentonville, Fayetteville and Rogers. Those three cities could be an educational guide for how Lawrence and Topeka can grow together like the northwest Arkansas region has, multiple speakers said at Thursday’s joint news conference.

In their first discussion of the city’s 2022 budget, city leaders said they would like to keep the property tax rate flat and were interested in ways to mitigate the city’s rising utility rates.
As part of its study session Tuesday, the Lawrence City Commission discussed 2021 revenue projections and directed staff regarding key policy questions that will affect the 2022 budget. Commissioners agreed that they did not want to increase the city’s property tax rate as part of the budget.
“I definitely want to leave the mill levy flat,” Mayor Brad Finkeldei said. “I think that’s a starting point.”

Enough trash to fill five Olympic-sized swimming pools was uncovered at the construction site for the U.S. Engineering Metalworks plant at VenturePark.
City leaders have increased the economic incentives for a new manufacturing plant by about $700,000 to help cover the cleanup of massive amounts of buried trash discovered on the construction site, which is within the city’s business park.
As part of its meeting Tuesday, the Lawrence City Commission voted unanimously to adopt a resolution to authorize an increase in the 10-year property tax abatement for the U.S. Engineering Metalworks plant that will help offset the estimated $1.5 million cleanup cost. The plant will eventually bring 140 jobs to the city, and commissioners agreed it was important to provide the financial support needed to make sure the project was able to proceed.
